There were several Conferences and Lectures offered in the 2009 winter semester.
All students in Secondary IV and V attended a lecture on
Friday January 30, at Trafalgar covering areas such as Fair Trade, the
environment, sustainability and consumerism. The speaker was Stacey
Toews. (www.levelground.com)
All students at Trafalgar attended our own “Women of the World”
lecture on Friday March 27. Our speaker was Kelly Di Domenico, a
journalist who recently returned from eight months in Senegal. The
topic concerned humanitarian issues and women’s rights in Western Africa.
“Student Study” program for Secondary III to V students was held on
Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Temple Emanu El Beth Sholom on Sherbrooke
St., in Westmount. In examining Human Trafficking issues participants
focused on gender equality, pornography, and proposed legislative
changes. Speakers included film maker and activist Michael Cory
Davis, Canadian investigative journalist and author Julian Sher,
activist against violence towards women Joe Vess, investigative
journalist, activist and author Victor Malarek, and Norma Ramos, the
co-director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women.
“Green vs. Greed. Poverty in a Perishing Planet” A CAIS student conference, April 3 and 4, was hosted at The Study. Keynote speakers were Mark Kielburger (Free the Children) and Elizabeth May(Green Party Leader). (Up to 15 students Sec. I-V)
Four students and one teacher participated in the CAIS (Canadian Association of
Independent Schools)
Student Leadership Conference, Wednesday, April 15 - Sunday April 19,
2009, in Hamilton, Ontario.
“Destiny Quebec” at LCC, was held Tuesday, May 5. The theme was, “A World Without Oil”. The keynote speaker was adventurer and environmentalist Geoff Green.
