Congratulations to all students who participated in Girls for the Cure
2009. It was a warm and bright September day as students, teachers and
friends walked to Mount Royal where Traf joined other girls’ schools
for the unveiling of the cheque presented to Saint Mary’s Hospital
Foundation. More than $105,000 was raised. The walk now raises funds to
support research and care for all cancers affecting women.
Plans for this year's walk began in May 2009. Meetings were held with
the Foundation and sister schools. Traf students who took on leadership
roles for the event worked tirelessly to ensure the Walk would be
educational, memorable and, of course, fun! All students participated
in an Awareness Assembly where they heard a cancer survivor speak of
her battle. The pep rally on walk day assembled an energetic team of
girls who made sure that all members of the Traf community were ready
for the hike up Mount Royal. This year Traf mums were invited to join
the walk and then returned to the school for the 1st Annual Mother & Daughter BBQ.
Many students succeeded in raising over $100.00 each and had their
names entered in a draw for the three beautiful Avon baskets. Others
earned house points for every $10.00 donated. Taryn Welikovitch won 2
movie premiere passes a month for an entire
year for raising the most money at Traf, and Katrina Thompson won $50
in
Subway money for having the most number of donations at Traf.
Trafalgar initiated Girls for the Cure in 1995 and remains proud of our
contribution to cancer awareness and treatment. To date over 1.5
million dollars have been raised. Thanks to everyone who donated to
this important cause.
