Internet Public Library Reference Center - An excellent annotated reference site with information and links to many topics and subjects.

Bartleby.com - "The pre-eminent Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students, researchers and the intellectually curious with unlimited access to books and information on the web free of charge," includes quotations, encyclopedia, dictionary, thesaurus and English usage, authors,titles, etc.

Information Please - Almanacs, dictionaries, dictionaries, encyclopedias etc. and lots of educational tools.

Refdesk - "The single best source for facts on the Net."

iTools - Very useful collection of reference material including full-text dictionaries, thesauri, biographies, maps etc.

The Canadian Encyclopedia/l'Encyclopédie canadienne - The complete encyclopedia online. Includes encyclopedia of music in Canada, Maclean's, timelines of Canadian history. "The most comprehensive and authoritative source of information on all things Canadian."

Encyclopedia.com - More than 57,000 frequently updated articles from the Columbia Encyclopedia. Each article is enhanced with links to newspaper and magazine articles as well as pictures and maps.

Wikipedia - An open-content encyclopedia in many languages which was started in January 2001 - there are now 1,438,000 articles in the English version.

Free Internet Encyclopedia - An encyclopedia composed of information available on the internet. There is a Micro-Reference: an alphabetically arranged set of links to information, and a Macro-Reference: a thematic arrangement with an index.

1911 Edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica - The famous edition with much information still relevant today -over 29 volumes with articles written by experts in their fields many of whom were the most famous people of their age, e.g. Henry Ford. It was considered to represent the sum of human knowledge at the beginning of the 20th century.
