A History of Giving at Trafalgar School for Girls
The first act of “giving” began with the founder himself, Montreal businessman Donald Ross, who bequeathed the bulk of his estate to establish a school for the education of young women. Additional contributions led to the opening of The Trafalgar Institute (our original name) in 1887. Trafalgar School for Girls has been fortunate to receive many gifts and donations over the last 124 years, all of which have enhanced the school and enriched the lives of the students. Donations and bequests have made major improvements possible: for example, the Simpson St. Wing (1902); the Caverhill Wing (1973); the 4th floor addition (1986); and the extensive gym and cafeteria renovations (2006).
Generous donations have also supported many Traf students directly over the years. Annual Giving donations are the major source of funding for need-based financial support to deserving girls. Annual Giving gifts allow our foundation to continue providing crucial funding for Trafalgar’s Bursary Fund Program, which in turn supports our goal of student diversity.
Tuition fees and MEES grants are the major sources of operating revenue. Fundraising activities (e.g. gala, bursary lunches), auxiliary enterprises (e.g. uniform shop), and disbursements from the Trafalgar Ross Foundation make up the rest. Capital improvements and upgrades, enhanced co-curricular programs and our Bursary Fund Program, are all made possible through the generosity and leadership of our donors.
There are many ways to make a gift to the school and many opportunities to make a difference for our students – current and future. Trafalgar would not be able to meet the needs of its students today, nor plan and invest for the future, without charitable investments from parents, alumnae and friends of the school.
