We are pleased to announce that the Traf Reads 2010 book has
been selected!
The selection committee, composed of nominated members from each grade
level, has been meeting since January to plow through the myriad book
title suggestions from students and staff. The committee read the three
finalists this March, and voted on the winner in April. This year's
selection, The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian, by
National Book Award winner Sherman Alexie, is a powerful story of a
young native man who transfers from his school on the Spokane
Reservation to the all-white High School in the next town so that he can
get the education he needs to pursue his dreams. At once hilarious and
heart-breaking, we hope this semi-autobiographical novel will provoke
many discussions about poverty, racism as well as the challenges of
growing up. For a summary of the book and some information about the
author, please click here.
WHAT IS TRAF READS?
The whole Traf Community
(students, staff and hopefully parents) will all read a student
selected novel over the course of summer 2010. We're joining a growing
list of schools, and even entire cities, who are united through the
shared experience of reading the same book. As the last few years of
Traf Reads have proved, not only does this bring us together as a
community, but it also generates a real excitement about reading.
