CoLab Stories

Introducing the CoLab Open Classroom Series

In November, the McGill Faculty of Education’s 21st Century Learning class came to visit Trafaglar School for Girls’s Grade 7 Science class to see learning in action.

The Trafalgar students opened up their classroom to the McGill undergraduate students to share their experience with inquiry-based learning. After hearing from the students first-hand, the Mcgill class followed the discussion with a lunch-and-learn with various Trafalgar teachers.

A McGill student reflected on his visit to Traf by sharing the following:
"Seeing 21st-century learning in action with seventh graders was truly inspiring. The teacher implemented project-based learning and used collaborative tools to empower students to take ownership of their learning. I watched as students worked collaboratively to come up with a collective science project. The teacher acted as a guide, providing support and resources instead of directing every step. It was a perfect demonstration of the principles we've discussed in class and confirmed my thoughts [...]about preparing students for an unpredictable and complex future. It gave me hope for the future of education by showing that effective practices are in place to help students develop the necessary skills for success."

This visit is one example of how the CoLab is working to bridge the gap between research and practice. In a new initiative called the Open Classroom Series, the CoLab intends to continue offering opportunities to invite university students in real-world classrooms, and vice versa, bring practicing teachers into university classes.

Together, we can help inform and reshape the future of education - one classroom at a time. We look forward to opening our doors!

Mission

Through an innovative and collaborative school-university partnership, the CoLab fosters dynamic learning environments and action-oriented research that advance educational practice for a rapidly changing world.
