COMING FULL CIRCLE ON EARTH DAY

In recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd Trafalgar students and staff joined groups from other schools and a wider audience online to hear from speaker Nicole Rycroft, founder of Canopy.
Canopy believes that the fashion industry can be a catalytic force in the global shift to circular models of production, and their CanopyStyle campaign works to “safeguard the world’s forests, freshwater and climate by shifting supply chains toward ethical, sustainable and circular sourcing standards.”

In their advisory periods on April 21st, Traf students prepared for the talk by watching a short video featuring Nicole, and read the article A Guide To The Most And Least Sustainable Fabrics. They discussed what they were wearing that day, examined the labels in them, talked about what happens to their clothes when they outgrow them, and created a list of ideas for what to do with unwanted clothing. These discussions provided a helpful background for the presentation on Thursday, and fueled many informed questions there.

Special thanks Hearts in the Ice (co-founded by Trafalgar’s own Sunniva Sorby '78) for connecting Traf to Nicole through the Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants series.
