WHAT A W.O.W. WEEK!

Thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of Head Girl Daniella Lang and her Committee, Traf’s annual W.O.W. initiative inspired and engaged everyone involved in it. First launched in 2002 in honour of International Women’s Day, WOW (an acronym standing for Women of the World) recognizes and celebrates "the empowerment and influence of women around the world."

Over the years, Traf students have participated in a wide variety of WOW group activities, and heard from many different speakers. This year, students and staff gathered both in the gym (in their “pods”) and online to hear from Montreal’s own Dr. Liane Feldman.

In January 2020 Dr. Feldman became the first woman to be appointed to the role of Surgeon-in-Chief and Medical Director of the Surgical Mission of the MUHC. The appointment followed many years of work dedicated to improving the quality and efficiency of surgery, to optimize patient outcomes. But as she explained to her Traf audience, the pathway to her current role was neither direct, nor always clear: learning by exploring possibilities, listening to colleagues and mentors, and balancing her personal and professional life allowed her to grow and develop, and ultimately to live her childhood dream of “helping other people, and making a real difference in their lives.”

The committee organized other activities in addition to the speaking event, including discussions during advisory, posters with tear-off messages (designed to offer encouragement or thanks to someone inspiring), a dress-down day and tampon drive in support of Monthly Dignity, and a fun, open-mic “poetry slam” event.

All in all, this year’s WOW definitely realized its lofty goals!
