Spanish as a Third Language
Spanish is compulsory in Secondary II and becomes an optional course in Secondary III through V. The overall goal of the program is to produce students who can communicate effectively in a third language and are exposed to Hispanic culture.

Spanish II

Credits: 4
Periods per cycle: 4
As students are introduced to spoken and written Spanish, the course aims to teach them strategies to become more efficient language learners and to increase their interest in Hispanic culture. Emphasis is on basic oral communication skills through project-based learning. Classes are dynamic; students explore real language challenges while developing cross-curricular skills and working collaboratively. They engage with authentic dialogues, practice active speaking, and begin reading and writing to anchor their learning.

Spanish III (Optional Course)

Prerequisite: Spanish II
Students who might be interested:
Students wishing to improve Spanish language skills and explore different cultures dynamically and flexibly.
Course content:
A continuation of Secondary II, this course teaches language structures through projects with a global education focus on Latin America and Spain. Students encounter authentic learning situations and develop language and expression skills to communicate on real-world issues. Reading authentic texts, discussing chosen topics, and writing opinion texts help develop both language and analytical skills. The course includes cultural outings, music, movies, and reading a Spanish novel.

Spanish IV/V (Optional Course)

Prerequisite: Spanish III
Students who might be interested:
Students aiming to deepen their Spanish skills and knowledge of Latin American and Spanish civilizations, cultures, and social issues. This course may be taken in Secondary IV and/or V.
Course content:
Building on Spanish III, students improve language skills through inquiry-based projects on cultures and social issues of Spanish-speaking countries. They read authentic articles, watch videos, and engage in podcasts, discussions, and argumentative writing to broaden international understanding and social responsibility. Two novels are also read and discussed.
