Physical Education & Health

Our Physical Education program encourages students to embrace physical activity for life, while fostering values like sportsmanship, collaboration, and goal setting. We invite every student to find a form of movement that engages them and supports overall balance and well-being.

Through a variety of activities, students develop essential technical and fundamental movement skills while having fun. They are encouraged to try new experiences and take healthy risks, all within a supportive environment that nurtures confidence and a growth mindset.
From Cycle I through Secondary V, the program combines skill development, fitness, and teamwork with an emphasis on healthy lifestyle habits. Intramurals, inter-house activities, and interscholastic sports provide opportunities for students to stay active, grow, and thrive.
Throughout all grade levels, students explore and develop the three core competencies of the Quebec Physical Education curriculum. See the competencies outlined below.

  • Competency 1

    Performs movement skills in different physical activity settings

    Through a variety of sports and physical activities, including team sports as well as individual activities, students will develop the following skills: 
    • Balance
    • Coordination (i.e. throwing a ball at a point and with good technique)
    • Synchronization (incorporating breathing techniques into movement, aiming a pass at a moving targets, etc) 
    • Evaluating the technique that should be used for a given activity (i.e. pacing oneself vs. sprinting depending on the length of run) 
    • Fitness activities which practice unilateral and bilateral movements

  • Competency 2

    Interacts with others in different physical activity settings

    From Secondary I to Secondary V, students are placed in a variety of learning situations in which they engage in physical activities with others, either as teammates or as opponents. 
    • Students work in teams and learn and practice principles of communication. 
    • Students learn how to navigate competition in an ethical and sportsmanlike way
    • Sportsmanship, respect, and fairness are modeled and prioritized throughout each unit
    • Students have the chance to learn about and adopt various team roles both in and out of the game such as team captain, coach, scorekeeper, goalkeeper, offence vs. defence, referee. 
    • Students work in teams to practice principles of collaboration and synchronization through passing, positioning, evading, guarding, etc.
    • Students learn to strategise and reflect with teammates.

  • Competency 3

    Adopts a healthy, active lifestyle
    • Goal setting: students use the SMART and FITT principles to set a specific health and fitness goal each term
    • Learning to set realistic and ambitious goals regarding health and wellness
    • Discussion of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, including physical activity, hydration, sleep, and nutrition.
    • Discussion of the relationship between physical and mental health. 
    • Reflect and self-evaluate on their progress throughout the year
    • Discussion of healthy lifestyle extending beyond phys ed class (lifelong healthy habits)
At Trafalgar, our Physical Education program is carefully structured to help students grow physically, socially, and emotionally at every stage of their high school journey. Each grade level builds on the skills and healthy habits developed in the previous year, ensuring a balanced progression in movement, teamwork, and wellness.

Physical Education & Health Sec I & II

Credits: 2 each | Periods: 4 per cycle
At this level, students build physical and motor skills through a wide variety of individual and team activities. They explore aerobics, badminton, basketball, pickleball, handball, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, softball, volleyball, track and field, and low-organizational games.
Students also begin developing safe practices, positive interactions with peers, and knowledge of healthy lifestyle habits. Friendly competitions within houses and intramurals make participation fun, while interscholastic teams are available for students looking for more committed opportunities.

Physical Education & Health Sec III

Credits: 2 | Periods: 4 per cycle
Students refine and apply the skills they’ve learned in more game-like and structured settings. Activities include pickleball, badminton, basketball, ultimate frisbee, handball, soccer, softball, touch football, volleyball, track and field, and low-organizational games.
A continued focus on healthy lifestyle planning encourages students to integrate fitness and well-being into daily life.

 

Physical Education & Health Sec IV

Credits: 2 | Periods: 3 per cycle
Students continue to advance their skills through a broader variety of activities, including yoga, pilates, and fitness program planning. Team and individual sports, along with low-organizational games and track and field, remain central.
The program emphasizes wellness, balance, and long-term healthy habits, helping students connect their physical activity to overall well-being.


Physical Education & Health Sec V

Credits: 2 | Periods: 3 per cycle
In the final year, students take greater ownership of their health and fitness. There is an increased emphasis on peer teaching and designing personal fitness programs. Activities include dance, yoga, pilates, fitness training, pickleball, badminton, basketball, ultimate, handball, soccer, softball, flag football, track and field, and volleyball.
Students leave the program with strong physical skills, a commitment to a healthy lifestyle, and confidence to carry the tools they’ve learned into life beyond high school.
